One groovy Halloween, man.

It’s weekends like the one I just had that make me want to move back to Houston already! Family, good friends, delicious food, cool weather… ahhh I miss it already! I accompanied my friend Jessica for the Montrose Crawl in Houston and it was SO damn fun! The costumes were amazing and it had been too long since I was out on the town in Houston. (Plus I got to spend some quality time with Jess!) My costume of choice this wear was the “classic” hippie. Not a psychedelic, tied-dyed, flower power hippie but more along the lines of a “natural-Joplin-bohemian” hippie. Luckily my Mom sported this style for a bit in the 70s and it turned out pretty damn awesome! I sort of wish I could dress like that all the time.. It was so much fun and I can’t wait until next year! I hope all you ghouls + goblins have a Happy Spooktacular Halloween!! xx

Houston night life.

BLACK LIGHTS @ brasil!

My friend, the flesh-eating zombie (Jessica) and me!

Mom’s bag from the 70s with her zig-zag man patch. Far-out, man.

Houston’s finest regulatin’ the streets.

She’s crawling out of her grave to come eat my brains!

So a zombie, a hippie and Hermione walk into a bar…

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice… [late-night tex-mex pick-me-up @ EL REAL.]

I made a pumpkin cheesecake with a caramel/pecan topping for the family Sunday evening after a kickass dinner. A perfect ending to such a fun weekend! xx

This week..

Ever have one of those weeks where NO matter what you do you just can’t get it right.

Examples from my week…
ONE
I needed to get to a Halloween store but no matter which turn I took I inevitably ended up at a one-way street that took me in the opposite direction. (I had my GPS going too..) At one point I had a visual but I just could not find the road to get me there. FORTY minutes later I pull into the damn parking lot, walk into the store and find they no longer had what I needed in stock.

TWO
I receive my long awaited package in the mail… all banged up and awesome!

THREE
I am in an ALMOST bitter dispute with my apartment complex because my refrigerator will not seal properly and they are unable to correct the situation. They have been out to my apartment to “fix it” THREE times in the past month. I made a fourth trip to the office on Monday because it is still not right. For as much as I pay and as calm and cooperative as I have been, they should be out there ASAP to fix this! I am paying for a constant running refrigerator and they seem to have no regard for customer service! They are about to wake a sleeping beast let me tell ya!

FOUR
I have also been the ULTIMATE klutz this week. Nearly everything I pick up I drop and if there is a chance something can get caught on something else it does. I have had a hard time typing and using CAD this week because my brain has just NOT functioning! (I apologize for bad grammar and/or misspellings in this post.) I have caught myself saying, “Come on Amanda! GET IT TOGETHER!!” out loud more than once this week and my co-workers probably think I am insane. Very few have conversed with me.. Hmm..

And for the cherry on top… I had a principal architect from another firm contact my boss stating that I had refused to put something together and that our company was NOT honoring our commitment to do the work. I about came out of my skin! I have a lot of pride when it comes to my work and this was like a punch in the face. My words somehow got twisted or misconstrued down the road. It was eventually all worked out but my pride is still a bit bruised.

So yeah it has just been one of those weeks where it has just one thing after another… But Thursday night came to the rescue and turned my week around!

Every year my friend and I get together for our annual pumpkin carving extravaganza! We have been doing it for 7 years and this was our 6th Annual!! (We missed one year while she was living in New York doing the modeling thing..) Crazy how time flies! Her chef of a boyfriend cooked us an badass dinner, we dressed up the dogs, carved our pumpkins and watched game SIX of the World Series. It definitely made up for the rest of my crappy week!

Now I just can’t wait for this weekend to get started already! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! xx

A Kitchen Dream

When I come across a space that I love, I usually know in that first instance because my stomach jumps. Sometimes it can jump prematurely and after further inspection of the space I actually learn that I hate it. And very rarely do I come across a space that inspires no jump whatsoever but I end up loving it. It’s a hit-or-miss system I’ve got going on here but it works 98% of the time, in my opinion anyway!

Well my stomach jumped when I came across this kitchen by a design firm in Chicago called Kitchen Lab. To me, one of the most important spaces in a home is the kitchen. I have so many inspiration photos for my dream kitchen and trying to fit everything I like/want into one is a chore. This one came pretty dang close though with the dark island against white cabinetry, white countertops, subway tiles(even over the hood!), Tolix stools, pendant lighting and paneled windows. I could move into this kitchen and have very little to change. I would get rid of the patterned backing inside the upper cabinets and then pop off those glass cabinet doors and have open shelving. I would probably replace the drawer hardware and get a stainless steel sink too. So yeah, there would be a few more tweaks here and there to fit my own personal preferences but I really like the base elements going on here. Ch-check it out!

FIVE of a Kind

I admit that I can be a slave to brands/labels. I try not to be, honest! Clearly, I would love to own top of the line, but I can’t exactly support that kind of lifestyle. Plus, sometimes it gets to me spending all this money when I can get something just as close for a fraction of the cost. (Be wary though.. you get what you pay for!)

I have been doing quite a bit of online shoe shopping lately and I starting seeing double…triple… There were slight variations from one shoe to the next but when you line them up it was hard to remember who came from where. Take these black peep-toe wedge booties for example. There are slight variations between the shoes (and sometimes the photography can give it away) but they pretty much all make the same statement, right? Why would I pay $800 for a statement that I could make with $30?? (Yes, I am aware of better materials and construction with the higher-end labels but damn!) This is too close of a call.

Can you sort out the hierarchy of this group??

Concrete Clutch

From Ivanka Design Studio… The Concrete Clutch!

It is no secret that concrete is one of my FAVORITE materials. Now I can carry it around with me?! So badass. Sure I have some reservations (weight, durability…) but I think I need to have one of these! Price range from €245 – €345 (roughly $365 – $475) What a conversation starter!! HA!
